A visit to Balboa Park in San Diego will suffice the entertainment needs of nearly everyone. Unlike most city parks, this National Historic Landmark isn’t simply an open-area recreational park; in fact, it’s quite the opposite. Balboa Park is home to numerous gardens, museums, shops and restaurants. In addition, Balboa Park is home to one of San Diego’s most popular tourist attractions, the San Diego Zoo.

The San Diego Zoo is one of the world’s largest zoos. It is home to over 4,000 animals of over 800 species, including rare species such as the Buerger’s tree kangaroos from New Guinea, long-billed kiwis of New Zealand and the giant tortoises from the Galapagos.

Popular exhibits in the zoo include the Polar Bear Plunge, one of the largest polar exhibits in the world. The Polar Bear Plunge is an arctic habitat with species such as reindeer, Pallas’ cats, arctic plants and polar bears. The animals appear to be in one large enclosure together, although they are separated. The main attraction of the Polar Bear Plunge is the Plunge, an underwater viewing room that allows guests to see bears swimming underwater.

Another popular exhibit is Tiger River. Guests walk along a path leading to a tiger’s lair, crocodile pool and more! The tigers’ beautiful habitat was designed to look and feel like their natural rain forest habitat. Visitors can see the tigers through a viewing window in one of the tigers’ favorite napping spots, a heated cave.

Other realistic exhibits such as Gorilla Tropics, the Rainforest Aviary, the Flamingo Lagoon house and numerous animal attractions sure to please everyone! Several dining facilities in the zoo offer spectacular rain forest views, such as Albert’s and the Treehouse Café.

The San Diego Zoo also operates the San Diego Wild Animal Park, an enormous facility that is home to many species of animals. Wild and endangered animals from continents such as Asia, Africa, Australia, and North and South America enjoy humongous free-range enclosures. In fact, the Africa exhibit is larger than the San Diego Zoo. The park spans an area of 1,800 acres, approximately 700 acres of which are explored by the Wgasa Railway. The San Diego Wild Animal Park is open for visitors, but hours vary by season.

Another popular animal attraction in San Diego is SeaWorld. Visitors can observe numerous exhibits and shows, such as the Rocky Point Preserve, where guests can touch and learn about bottlenose dolphins. At the Shark Encounter exhibit, guests walk through an acrylic tube nearly sixty feet long located at the bottom of a 280,000-gallon aquarium, where several species of sharks can be seen.

While visiting SeaWorld in San Diego, don’t forget to catch a show starring one of America’s favorite animal celebrities Shamu, the killer whale.
